One indirect effect of the recession on schools is the increase in children eligible for free and reduced price meals. The Washington Post article "Joblessness at home a burden on schools" reports that many Virginia counties have seen sizable increases in the percent of students who qualify. For example, in Fairfax county the fraction of students eligible for free and reduced price meals has risen from 20% to 25% in the last three years.
