The National Math and Science Initiative pays students $100 for scoring 3 or higher on the AP exam as well as rewarding teachers according to the number of students in their class who pass the exam. The NY times article "Incentives for Advanced Work Let Pupils and Teachers Cash In" reports the experience of a teacher at South High Community School in Boston who saw enrollment in his AP statistics course soar (one requirement imposed by the National Math and Science Initiative is that enrollment barriers be removed) with 43 passing the exam earning the teacher a $7300 bonus.
